Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Myopia (nearsightedness) occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina rather than directly on it. Distant objects appear blurry while near objects remain clear. Myopia is increasingly prevalent worldwide, especially in Asian countries, and high myopia carries additional risks of retinal complications.

Symptoms

Blurred distance vision
Squinting to see distant objects
Eye strain and headaches
Difficulty seeing while driving (especially at night)
Need to sit closer to screens or boards
Clear near vision

Risk Factors

Family history (parental myopia)
Excessive near work and screen time
Reduced outdoor activity in childhood
Urban living environments
Higher education levels
Early onset of myopia

Causes

Myopia results from the eyeball growing too long (axial myopia) or the cornea/lens having excessive focusing power. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute. Increased near work (reading, screen time) and reduced outdoor activity in childhood are associated with higher myopia prevalence.

Treatment Approaches

LASIK / Femto LASIK

Laser reshaping of the cornea to correct mild to moderate myopia. A quick, blade-free procedure with rapid visual recovery.

ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)

A biocompatible lens implanted inside the eye for high myopia. Reversible and preserves the cornea. Excellent visual quality.

Glasses and Contact Lenses

Corrective lenses remain the simplest option. For children, special myopia-control lenses can slow progression.

Prevention & Care

Encourage outdoor time for children (2+ hours daily)
Follow the 20-20-20 rule for screen use
Adequate lighting when reading
Regular eye exams to monitor progression
