Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), also called Clear Lens Extraction (CLE), removes the eye's natural lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). It is an excellent option for patients with high refractive errors who may not be suitable candidates for LASIK or ICL.
RLE is ideal for patients over 40 with presbyopia, those with high hyperopia or myopia beyond LASIK range, patients with early lens changes, and those who want to eliminate the possibility of future cataracts while correcting their vision.
The surgery is identical to modern cataract surgery. The natural lens is removed through a micro-incision and replaced with a premium IOL. Both eyes are typically treated one to two weeks apart. The procedure takes about 15–20 minutes per eye.
With modern multifocal and extended depth of focus IOLs, most patients achieve excellent distance and near vision, significantly reducing or eliminating dependence on glasses. Results are permanent since the artificial lens does not change over time.
