Cataract

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural crystalline lens, which lies behind the iris and pupil. It is the most common cause of reversible blindness worldwide. Cataracts develop gradually, causing progressive blurring, glare sensitivity, and color changes. While most common after age 60, cataracts can also affect younger adults due to various factors.

Symptoms

Gradual blurring of vision
Increased sensitivity to glare and bright lights
Difficulty seeing at night or in dim lighting
Fading or yellowing of colors
Frequent changes in glasses prescription
Double vision in the affected eye

Risk Factors

Advancing age (most common after 60)
Diabetes mellitus
Prolonged corticosteroid use
Excessive UV light exposure
Previous eye injury or surgery
Smoking and excessive alcohol use

Causes

Most cataracts develop due to aging-related changes in lens proteins. UV radiation exposure, diabetes, steroid medications, eye trauma, smoking, and genetic factors can accelerate cataract formation. In some cases, children can be born with congenital cataracts.

Treatment Approaches

Micro Incision Cataract Surgery (MICS)

Ultra-small incision phacoemulsification with foldable IOL implantation. The most widely performed cataract procedure.

Femto-Laser Assisted Surgery (FLACS)

100% blade-free laser-assisted surgery offering enhanced precision for capsulotomy, lens fragmentation, and corneal incisions.

Premium IOL Options

Multifocal, toric, and extended depth of focus lenses can reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses after surgery.

Prevention & Care

Wear UV-protective sunglasses outdoors
Manage diabetes and blood sugar levels
Avoid smoking
Regular eye examinations after age 40
